In Uttar Pradesh too, a similar scheme is run by the government, in which the government bears the entire expense of the marriage and many couples get married simultaneously.

The Uttar Pradesh government had started the Chief Minister Mass Marriage Scheme in October 2017. Under this scheme, marriage ceremonies take place according to the customs and traditions of different communities and religions. According to the government’s website, the aim of the scheme is to end the custom of unnecessary display and expenditure in marriage celebrations.

Who gets the benefit of the scheme?
According to the government website, families of all categories falling under the annual income limit of Rs 2 lakh get the benefit of this scheme. Under this scheme, there is also a provision for marriage of widows and divorced women. After applying, many couples are called to one place and their marriage is done. What are the benefits of the scheme?
In this scheme, necessary materials for marriage like clothes, toe rings, anklets, utensils and similar things are provided. Apart from this, Rs 35 thousand is also deposited in the girl’s account. A couple gets married for just Rs 6,000. This helps in purchasing necessary materials. There is a provision to organize mass marriages for the marriage of 10 couples at the urban body (city panchayat, municipal council, municipal corporation), area panchayat, district panchayat level.
